Simplifying Your Baby Gear

As a mom of five, I’ve been through both sides of the spectrum. Having way too much stuff with my first two kids. Then learning how to pare it down with my younger three. With my first two children, I had all the baby gear. We’re talking swings, bouncers, play mats, and more. I was constantly collecting things I didn’t need and stressing over how to store and organize them all. Moving from Alaska to Florida with just one suitcase per person really put things into perspective. When it was time to prepare for my third baby, I knew I wanted a different approach. I wanted to keep it simple and focus only on essential baby gear that would actually make life easier.

My Top Picks for Essential Baby Gear

Now that I’ve gone through this process a few times, I’ve narrowed it down to what truly matters. Here’s a rundown of my essential baby gear list, based on what worked best for me with my last two children.

1. Pack and Play: I love the pack and play for its versatility. It’s great as a bassinet, a changing station, and a safe place to put your baby down when you need a break. Especially if you have older kids or pets around).

2. Baby Carrier: A good baby carrier is non-negotiable. I personally recommend the Lenny Lamb Leni upgrade. It’s soft, comfortable, and will last from the newborn stage all the way through the toddler years. It’s been a lifesaver when I need my hands free but still want to keep my baby close.

3. Clothes: Keep it minimal. Babies grow so fast, and you don’t need a ton of outfits. I stick with about 7-10 mix-and-match onesies and pants in similar colors. This makes laundry easier and gives me the freedom to buy a couple of special outfits without feeling guilty or overwhelmed by too many options.

4. Diaper Genie: This one is a personal preference, but I found it super convenient, especially during the newborn phase. It keeps the mess and smell contained and is a small luxury that makes a big difference.

5. Bouncy Chair: This is one of those items I didn’t think I needed but ended up loving. My husband bought it when we came home from the hospital with our fourth baby, and it’s been a daily lifesaver. Whether I’m taking a shower or running around with my older kids, the bouncy chair gives me peace of mind knowing the baby is safe and happy.

   Normally, I don’t use these kinds of items and prefer to let my babies explore freely. However, with multiple young kids at home and a dog, I needed a “safe place to land” for those moments when things get a little hectic. It made me feel a lot more comfortable than just leaving her on the floor.  Given the season of life and size of my family and pets, was a smart decision.

   That being said, having multiple chairs, swings, or gadgets is often unnecessary. In fact, they can create a pile-up of stuff and increase the risk of accidents like tripping, falling, or climbing. Keep it simple, and only get what truly serves your family in the moment!

Non-Essentials I Skipped

When it comes to essential baby gear, it’s equally important to know what you can live without. Over the years, I realized that things like play mats, swings, and excessive toys just weren’t necessary for us. Babies don’t need tons of toys. They need you, they need comfort, and they need a few essentials. Plus, fewer baby gadgets means less clutter for you to deal with.

The Game-Changer: Double Stroller

When our youngest came along, we finally decided to get a double stroller, and it’s been a game-changer. With five kids, including a newborn and a toddler, having the ability to put them both in a stroller makes outings so much easier. The double stroller can carry the diaper bag, snacks, and anything else we need for the day. iving me the freedom to navigate the busy life of a large family without feeling overwhelmed.

Keeping baby gear simple and focusing only on the essentials helps keep your home manageable and less chaotic.
