Decluttering Lies Moms Are Tired of Believing (and What’s Actually True)
If you’ve ever tried to simplify your home and felt discouraged, stuck, or like you’re somehow just bad at this—let me gently say:
You’ve probably been lied to.
Not in a mean or intentional way. But in the kind of way that happens when well-meaning advice doesn’t match real-life motherhood.
There are so many myths floating around about decluttering—and most of them are built for a version of life that doesn’t include snack wrappers in the couch cushions or toddlers screaming “I NEED THAT BROKEN TOY!”
Today, I want to lovingly bust some of those myths—and tell you the truth that will actually help you make progress.
Decluttering Lie #1: “You just need to be more organized.”
Nope. You need less to organize.
You could buy every color-coded bin at Target and still feel overwhelmed. Because organizing is just rearranging. Decluttering is removing.
And for moms, the problem usually isn’t a lack of systems—it’s an excess of stuff.
Truth: You don’t need a new system. You need a reset.
Decluttering Lie #2: “You can declutter your whole house in a weekend.”
Technically, yes. Realistically? No.
Especially not when you’re raising kids, juggling a thousand daily tasks, and living in a space that’s constantly being used.
You don’t need a crash-cleaning weekend. You need a method that works in 10-minute wins and meets you where you are.
Truth: Lasting decluttering doesn’t happen in a weekend. It happens in small, consistent steps.
Decluttering Lie #3: “You have to do it all or it’s not worth it.”
This is one of the sneakiest lies.
We think if we don’t declutter the entire kitchen, it’s not worth cleaning out one drawer. Or if we can’t tackle the playroom, there’s no point in tossing that broken toy.
But small progress is real progress. And those little wins build momentum faster than you think.
Truth: Every drawer counts. Every trash bag counts. Every step forward matters.
Lie #4: “You can’t start unless your spouse is on board.”
This one keeps so many moms stuck. They want to simplify, but feel like they need full family buy-in first.
Yes, it’s great when everyone is involved. But I’ve seen time and time again—when you start decluttering, your energy shifts. Your home starts to feel lighter. And more often than not, your family catches on.
Truth: You don’t need permission. You just need to begin.
Lie #5: “You should feel bad for getting rid of gifts, expensive items, or sentimental things.”
Oof. This one hits hard.
But here’s what I always tell the moms I work with: your home is not a storage unit for guilt.
If it’s causing stress, taking up space, or no longer serving you—you’re allowed to let it go.
You can keep the memory without keeping the object. You can be grateful for the gift and still say, “this doesn’t belong here anymore.”
Truth: Letting go isn’t wasteful. It’s wise.
You’re Not Alone—You’ve Just Been Operating with the Wrong Beliefs
Most moms aren’t failing at decluttering.
They’ve just been trying to do it with rules that were never built for them in the first place.
And that’s why I’m so excited about what I’m building next.
