What is clutter when you have kids?

Is It Clutter or Just Life? How to Tell the Difference

If you’re a mom who thinks decluttering will make your house picture-perfect all the time, or if you hold yourself to unrealistic standards of keeping a spotless home, this post is for you. It’s easy to assume that if your house doesn’t look clean 24/7, you haven’t decluttered enough or you’re just not a good enough housekeeper. But the truth is, that’s not how real life works—especially when you have kids.

I originally planned this episode months ago but wasn’t sure how to approach it. Recently, I hosted a four-week accountability session for moms in my Decluttering Simplified program, where they submitted photos of their spaces. This group included both new moms and alumni who’ve been decluttering for years. It was amazing to see the mix, and it reminded me of my Montessori training—where older children teach younger ones, and everyone learns together.

When Everyday Life Feels Like Clutter

Many alumni moms shared photos of their kitchens, living rooms, and playrooms, saying things like, “This still gets messy,” or “I feel like I should declutter more, but I don’t know what to get rid of.” But when I looked at their photos, I saw homes full of life—not clutter. I’ve worked with hundreds of moms one-on-one, and I can tell you: everyday mess isn’t the same as clutter.

Here’s how to tell the difference:

  1. Does It Fit Your Space? If your items physically fit into your space without making it feel cramped or chaotic, it might not be clutter. For example, one mom shared her playroom, worried about the mess. But the toys fit on the shelves, and her kids could manage cleanup. If it’s manageable and doesn’t overwhelm you, it’s probably just life happening.
  2. Does It Overwhelm You? Even if things fit, ask yourself if the space feels overwhelming. Are you constantly frustrated by the amount of stuff? Does it stress you out daily? If so, decluttering could help. But if it’s manageable and only feels messy after playtime or a busy day, you might not need to get rid of anything.
  3. Is It Time for a Routine? Sometimes, it’s not about decluttering more but creating routines. One mom felt overwhelmed by her kitchen at the end of the week. It wasn’t clutter—it was just the result of a busy life without a solid routine. Implementing micro-routines like nightly resets, laundry habits, and weekly cleanups can make a huge difference.

When Decluttering Becomes the Overwhelm

Many moms replace the overwhelm from clutter with the overwhelm of constant decluttering. You don’t need to declutter forever. At some point, it’s time to enjoy your life. Decluttering is meant to create space for what matters most—whether that’s focusing on your health, career, relationships, or even decluttering your finances.

If you find yourself still overwhelmed after decluttering, it might be time to look inward. Are there emotional or mental clutter you’re now noticing because you’ve cleared the physical stuff? Are there areas of your life—like communication with your spouse or your career goals—that need attention?

How to Move Forward

If you’re unsure whether you need to declutter more or just adjust your routines, here’s what you can do:

  • Join the Motherhood Simplified Facebook Group: Share photos of your spaces and ask for feedback. Our community of over 45,000 moms offers kind, supportive advice.
  • Reflect on Your Feelings: Are you overwhelmed by the stuff, or is it something deeper? Sometimes, what feels like a clutter problem is really a need for better routines or addressing other areas of life.
  • Implement Small Routines: Try nightly resets, weekly cleanups, or even a simple habit like clearing off your drop zone daily.

Decluttering isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a home that supports your life, not one that looks perfect in photos. Your home is meant to be lived in—mess and all.
