A quote block that says "how you feel in your home is an invitation to how others will feel in your home"

What’s a normal amount of mess with kids

What’s a normal amount of mess with kids

Many of us want to declutter so we aren’t embarrassed by our homes, can take photos freely, and invite people over.

But we also don’t want the pressure of living up to Pinterest perfect standards. How do we figure out what a normal amount of mess with kids is?

What’s the balance?

How do you tell when your home is a normal amount of lived in, versus totally cluttered.

1. It’s all about how YOU feel in your home.

How do you feel when you walk in? When you wake up/go to bed?
How YOU feel is the invitation you give to others to feel when they walk in.
If you’re apologizing for the mess (whether it’s there or not) they are going to match that.
When you feel at ease, they are going to match that.

If people overly critical of you/judgmental in general – that is THEIR problem, not yours.

2. How much time do you need to feel “ready” – what’s on your bare minimum list for having company over?

Mine: toilets, counters wiped down, random things put away. Basically it’s a nightly reset. I am just trying to make things not gross when people come over. Or at least… less gross, and less sticky.

3. It is your home, not who you are.

People are coming to see you. it’s okay if you’re feeling embarrassed right now, or overwhelmed.

It’s also okay to feel totally good about your home even if it’s not what you think other people would consider “drop in ready”.
