Decluttering is not microwaveable
It is going to take time, and that is normal! You can’t shortcut your decluttering. What I mean is there isn’t a way to make something that should take ten minutes, happen in one. And if you can, it’s not natural. Decluttering takes time.
Decluttering is a long game, and it often goes slower than we like – for a lot of reasons.
There are a lot of reasons that decluttering takes time
Deciding what to keep, and not keep is hard
Think about it. You have so much stuff in your home. In order to declutter your home, you will have to touch and decide on everything inside of it. Of course it is going to take some time. This is okay, and it is normal!
We have kids, and every day life
The likelihood of every other aspect of your life stopping so that you can declutter is next to none. It’s just going to happen. Your kids are still going to need fed, watered and paid attention to.
I know this. Decluttering does not have to be all or nothing though. You have spent a lot of time accumulating your stuff in the cracks of your everyday life. Now you are going to do it in reverse and get rid of your stuff in the cracks of your everyday life.
It has taken a lot of time to get the stuff you have
The thing about decluttering is that it does take effort, and it’s not as fun as GETTING stuff (but it can be). In the same way you spent time and energy accumulating it while your life carried on, you are going to have to spend time and energy getting it out while your every day life carries it on.
Also, remember that you didn’t accumulate it in a day and you didn’t get big blocks of time to accumulate it all. You can get rid of it in the same way it came in.
Decluttering can be simple, but you cannot take shortcuts to a clutter free home
Maybe you think it needs to be all or nothing. If you don’t get your home decluttered by Sunday night why even bother right?
We all seek instant gratification, and glorify shortcuts and bandaid solutions. Then are left disappointed when they don’t work, or because we don’t have what we really want because we don’t take small, significant steps toward it.
This is why I love before and afters – often times you don’t even realize how much you HAVE done because we’re such immediate beings we can only see what’s left in front of us. So take them, even if they’re just for you.
Now, decluttering does take time, and while it won’t happen in a day you CAN have the bulk of it done in just 4 weeks.
